THE CRAFT

AN AGE-OLD CRAFT
FOR MODERN BUILDING.

In a world that is becoming increasingly automated, it is becoming harder to find a connection to the earth. Natural stone is one of our greatest building materials — extracted from the ground and shaped by hand for millennia.

Stone dressing takes hewn stone and transforms it into more workable dimensional stone. When undertaken skilfully, it can be carefully prepared for modern building while retaining the character that makes natural stone unique.

Stone adds real character to a building and can remain beautiful for generations, gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.

LESS WASTE · MORE VALUE

RESPECT FOR
THE MATERIAL.

Stone is durable, natural and long-lasting. Dressing by hand gives me the opportunity to work closely with each piece and minimise unnecessary waste — making better use of reclaimed and natural stone while helping your budget go further.

ROUGH STONE.
READY TO BUILD.

A pile of reclaimed stone can look a long way from a finished wall. The work is in selecting it, reading it and dressing each piece so it can go back into a building properly.

WHO I AM

ADAM SMITH.
STONE DRESSER.

I’m Adam Smith, a left-handed stone dresser from Yorkshire. I’ve been working stone for 25 years and have developed my skills through a wide range of projects and positions with respected stone companies, including Traditional Stone in Horbury.

I employ traditional methods and use the tools I trust — tools that have almost become an extension of myself. I look after them, and they look after me.

I don’t work from rulers and measurements alone. My eyes are my guide, and a methodical approach has given me the opportunity to work on everything from bespoke traditional barn conversions to more modern homes.

WHAT I DO

NATURAL STONE.
PREPARED TO SUIT.

Natural stone offers great versatility, and I’m happy to advise on stone sourcing whether you’re looking for something striking or a material that blends more closely with the local architectural vernacular.

Hand-dressed coping stones can sit beautifully on a boundary wall, while quoins can complement and frame a building. The aim is always the same: to prepare the right stone, in the right way, for the project in front of us.
